New Post

So it’s been a while since i’ve made a post.  Not too sure why, just been busy I guess.  I just wanted to share some things going on with me.  I’ve realized that my theology is starting to shift a little bit and my life is not consistent with some of these changing ideas.  So I will be thinking and praying long about what this means.

A list of the things that are hitting home with me right now:

what I call “wake up” theology that you’ve heard me talk about before

The gospel truely reveals and is the power of God, and as such, we (and me espeically) need to live with more power from God.

Participation of the body of Christ - every week I go to a church that runs a top-down service and it drives me crazy that some people’s spiritual exesitence is what they see on a Sunday morning and doesn’t extend anywhere else. I guess this goes hand in hand with the Wake Up theology.

Temptation. To quote Matisyahu “we are warriors fighting for our souls.”  We need to start thinking about temptation, and muse over the idea of taking radical measures against sin in our communities. (I do know the problem with that is the question “what is sin?” I think it can be done while still being loving and open with people and agressive against sin)

So my theology is moving towards living a life of power from God, free from the restraints of sin and this world, and liberating people to begin in the same revolution. You’ve heard the phrase “take back America” I think its time to take back the Church, and save her from the prison that she is in.

So of the things listed above, what do you resonate with? Or do you disagree with anything?

Spiritual Mr Miyagi

So I was bored the other day and started watching the Karate Kid on TV. I had seen it years ago, but thought I would rewatch it to see if it still held up. The movie overall held up, although it does have its ridiculous scenes that could only come out of the 80s.

One thing that stood out to me though, was Mr. Miyagi’s character and how he took Daniel in to teach him self confidence and treated him like his own son. Daniel learned from Mr. Miyagi by more or less living with him and doing seemingly monotonous house hold chores. The wax-on, wax-off was really learning the technique of a certain kind of block. Same with painting the house, etc. Daniel doesn’t see the benefit in those household chores, until he begins to learn martial arts.

So when I watched this movie, I had an overwhelming sense that I need to find a spiritual Mr. Miyagi. Someone more mature that can teach and reprove through normal tasks of everyday life. Almost like a father, but different. I think that it is true that we don’t respect our elders, both physically and spiritually. Our elders really can teach us things we can’t learn on our own. I think this is at the heart of discipleship. For us to have a Spiritual Mr. Miyagi to help guide us through our spiritual journey. Eventually, or at the same time, we in turn can be the same role in someone else’s life spurring each other onward toward Christ.

Church Discipline

I went to a church this morning different then my regular church because someone stole a wheel off my car. (sucks) Anyway, I used to attend this church before I attended Multnomah. I’m not a big fan of the “topical” style of teaching myself, and in this case it ended up being a lot of stories and practical applications that didn’t have much if any scriptural references. The text was from Eph. 6 where Paul is talking about children obeying their parents and parents loving and disciplining their children. While I wasn’t really on board with all the pastor’s applications of this text, it did get me thinking about our relationships with each other, with God, and how we are supposed to interact when it comes to someone being wrong. The New Law

So this is a free verse kind of poem I wrote the other day as I was reflecting on what I think the unspoken Law is in the American Church. We’ve probably already talked about it. I can thank Dr. Metzger at Multnomah for the opening line. Enjoy. Tell me if you like it. Read the rest of this entry »

Doctrines that need to be understood or revoked?

This is more of a forum question then a post, but what doctrines do you feel that we currently buy in to (stated or unstated) that we need to reinterprate or understand in a new way?

Boiling Point: New Wine’s Conf. on Global Warming

So I went to the majority of New Wine New Wineskins conference on global warming yesterday. I must say that I am challenged once again to rethink my role in relation to non-Christians as well as to the rest of the world.

One quote that stood out to me was brought up in Dr. Metzger’s lecture (reading Dr. Brad Harper’s chapter from their upcoming book together) and that quote is “it’s not how much progress we make, but if we live in faith.” This came from a discussion of eschatology and how some live in an escapist attitude because of their dispensational views.
